The Way to Begin—is to Begin

Systemic racism is rooted in centuries of structural and cultural reinforcement. Dismantling it can seem overwhelming and unwieldy. You may ask: “What is my role? Where do I start?” It’s a practice, and like all practices, the way to begin…. is to begin (and then keep at it).

In the context of Kenosha and the continuing deaths and injury of Black Americans at the hands of law enforcement, it’s enlightening to hear the analysis of this event by Trevor Noah, South African comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor, and Grammy and Emmy award-winning television host. He is the host of The Daily Show, an American satirical news program on Comedy Central.

In a compelling, honest and forthright monologue, Trevor Noah asks why the police shot Jacob Blake.  What is it about our history, our culture, our attitudes that permits – and continues to allow - such atrocities to take place?
