Lincoln Democratic Town Committee holds meeting to elect officers

Thanks to the 27 Lincoln Town Democratic Committee Members who turned up virtually via Zoom for the meeting on April 27. We had been hoping to make a quorum of 18, and we far surpassed that. It was so heartening for all of us on our Committee and for the energy of the future election.

And a special hearty thanks to Jennie Morris, who hosted the Zoom meeting, led the nomination process and ever so graciously led us through the meeting and provided support during the preparations.

Joan Kimball and Barbara Slayter opened the meeting and turned it over to Jennie Morris.

Election:

Nominations were sent by email to Jennie and a tentative slate was draw up. Jennie called for nominations from the floor, and none were made. The slate was unanimously passed, and with permission from the Committee, Secretary Lorraine Fiore cast a single vote for the slate. Officers elected:

Co-Chairs: Barbara Slayter and Joan Kimball

Vice Chair: Travis Rolland

Secretary: Lorraine Fiore

Treasurer: Rachel Mason

Affirmative Action Chair: Sharon Antia

Executive Committee

Barbara Slayter said that the Executive Committee meets approximately once a month. She said there are plans to enlarge the Executive Committee, and we hope to bring in some of the Committee members who have joined more recently. Barbara welcomed ideas from the larger Committee as we reorganize ourselves and function during this time of pandemic.

Appreciation for retiring Treasurer Alvin Schmertzler

Barbara and Joan presented Al Schmertzler with a virtual certificate (artwork by Sharon Antia) that acknowledged his work as treasurer and praising his ongoing work with the Committee, his devotion to progressive Democratic Causes and Candidates and his support of the Grandmothers for a Brighter Future. Lorraine Fiore, Rachel Mason, Joan Kimball, Barbara Slayter, Sarah Cannon Holden and Jennifer Glass gave accolades to Al for his work.

Other Business

Markey Campaign

Paul Shorb described the types of volunteer opportunities where the campaign could use volunteer help leading up to the September 1 Primary. Both Markey and Kennedy have the necessary signatures to be on the ballot. Volunteer opportunities include:

  1. calling;

  2. calling and texting family and friends:

  3. letters to the editor, and

  4. staying in touch online.

Gary Davis supported these activities. Paul immediately sent the information out by email to the Committee.

Web Page

Carolyn Montie gave an impressive presentation of our new website, with visuals, showing the scope of what we can find on this dynamic platform. Sections include: Who We Are, Calendar of Events, Calls to Action within News and Opinions, 2020 Election Analysis, and much more. Going forward, we’ll be able to seamlessly share news articles and upcoming events & opportunities to support Democratic wins in 2020 via the new website, its email platform, and social media. Joan said that the web page is beautiful, informative and easy to use, and far surpasses web pages of much larger groups. Visit www.lincolnmadems.org to learn more about what’s going on and how to get involved!

State Convention, 2020

Joan Kimball said that the 2020 State Convention was canceled because of Covid19. In lieu of our voting to support a Senatorial Candidate (Markey or Kennedy) which had been the major work of the Convention, the state committee, with the public support of both Markey and Kennedy) asked the Secretary of State to place both candidates on the ballot. Because the State Committee values the gathering of Democrats, the Committee plans a Convention after the primary. For those delegates and alternates who have paid in advance, the money can either go to their tickets for the Convention after the primary or they can get a refund by emailing them at: contact@massdems.org

Following a motion by Sarah Cannon Holden, and seconded, and voting by the waving of hands in support, the Zoom meeting was adjourned. And Joan and Barbara heartily thanked everyone who attended.

Onward,
Joan Kimball and Barbara Slayter
