Speakers Include:
Manisha Sinha is the Shirley A. Draper Chair in American History at the University of Connecticut. She is a leading authority on the history of slavery and abolition, the Civil War and Reconstruction.
Susan Ware is a pioneer in the field of women’s history, a leading feminist biographer and author of Why They Marched
Marcia Chatelain, professor of history and African American studies at Georgetown University, and a leading public voice on the history of race in America.
Lisa Tetrault, Associate Professor of History at Carnegie Mellon University and author of The Myth of Seneca Falls: Memory and the Women’s Suffrage Movement, 1848-1898.
These experts will provide historical background to present day challenges of ensuring full representation especially since the demise of the Voting Rights Act. They will talk about the forces that were at work after the Civil War and throughout Reconstruction and Jim Crow as mostly white women struggled so long and so hard for the vote, and what happened to women of color in the process.
